While there have been a lot of changes in status for women (at least in the West), I think basic gender stereotypes about women remain in place. As in the 19th century, women continue to be seen as more emotional, more home-oriented, more willing to sacrifice their own interests to support others (usually males), and ess able to think or act independently. As in the 19th century, 21st century women continue to be paid less than men, and they are just as prone to (or perhaps even more prone) to abuse at the hands of men, either physical, sexual, or emotional. Although much work has been done to decouple “gender” from biological sex and sexual orientation, women today continue to lead lives that are proscribed by what society expects of them.
