What is the long term effect of poverty and the prevalence of single female headed households in the African American community?

Poverty and single-parent households headed by women tend to work together, as many of such households are among the poorest in the Unites States.

In a way, this is a classic example of what is known as a vicious cycle. Children from poor single parent families often live in neighbourhoods with poor schools, gangs, and high crime levels. A single mother, especially if herself working a minimum wage job, may not be able to help her children do well at school thus making it much harder for the children to work their way out of poverty. Thus the ethnic disparities in wealth and education are passed down from one generation unless there is some concerted effort by schools and social service agencies to help poorer African American students stay in school. Affordable daycare, free medical care, and other social services can help.
