What could you buy in a store today for less than $500 and in 200 years be worth an unprecedented amount of money?its a creative essay assignment but i have no ideas

In my opinion, it could not be something that is a commodity like gold or silver.  That stuff will probably not be worth much more, taking inflation into account, than it is now.

To me, what you need to get is something that would be seriously collectible.  I mean, imagine if you had a copy of the first edition of some famous book from 1810 right now.  It would be worth a lot because of the fact that it is collectible.

So what you have to do is predict what would still be famous in 200 years.  Maybe you should get some Obama stuff since he's the first black president.  Or maybe you should buy an iPad.  People might be really interested in years from now to see what we thought was all futuristic.  Otherwise, try to predict what books or movies will still be famous and buy copies of those and preserve them.

Antiques are the most likely to skyrocket in value. Unfortunately, it seems to be very hard to predict what will become an antique. Generally, it seems that antiques are items of cultural or historical value. They are made by famous or historical figures. You might go into a store and get some of these goods, or find some of these documents, but you wouldn't likely know it at the time.

I would go with memorabilia, either sports figures or celebrities. These kinds of things seem to always appreciate in value, the only problem is that you may not be able to find a buyer willing to pay what the item is said to be worth.

Gemstones are a good option. The source for these items might be depleted. Nothing in the future could be invented to replace them, so they would be a good investment. Things like technological items could conceivably only have value as collectors’ items, and they would only be worth what people were willing to pay for them.

The world is going to be so much different in 200 years so I think that many things that are purchased and kept in mint condition will be worth a lot of money.

I think that books may be worth a lot of money in the future, especially if they are first edition or autographed. Everything is going digital right now so in 200 years very few, if any, paper books will even be made.

Things like cameras may be worth a lot of money if they are kept in mint condition. This kind of technology is also changing very fast so in 200 years cameras as we know them probably will not even exist.

Tanzanite is an example of a gemstone that is reportedly going to be depleted in the future so things like this may be worth a lot money in the future as well. They are fairly expensive but can be purchased for under $500.00.

I would say that one item that can be bought and be worth a great deal of money would be an Ipod shuffle.  Seeing that few, if anyone, was able to predict where portable music technology would go from ten years ago to now, it would make sense that in 200 years, the change in music technology would make a shuffle extremely valuable.  Another item that would be valuable 200 years from now would be an Albert Pujols Rookie Baseball Card.  Currently valued at ten dollars on ebay, I would have to figure that Pujols is a lock to set some major records in baseball.  Given his athletic prowess and what he can do in the game, he could be one of the great ones, so his rookie card would be quite valuable.

This is a great question, but I'm afraid no one who answers it will be around to see if their choices come true. The question reminds me of the Back to the Future movie where the Michael J. Fox character, while in the future, purchases an almanac containing past sports scores. It eventually reaches the hands of relatives of Fox's nemesis, Biff, in the present time. It is then used by Biff's grandson (as I recall) to place bets before the games are played. Naturally, all of the scores are accurate and all of the bets are wins. The grandson becomes one of the wealthiest men in town (or possibly the planet).

Needless to say, such a thing cannot be purchased in our real world. However, if I had to invest in one item that I thought would produce huge dividends in the future, I would probably choose the old stand-by: gold. Gold has skyrocketed once again, and it is possible that it will continue to do so for many decades to come.
