Themes: Survival and Isolation
The story is saturated with the theme of survival. Before the sniper eliminates any Free State soldiers, he is acutely aware that “there were enemies watching.” His actions are driven by the instinct to survive, necessitating the removal of anyone who threatens his existence. This includes the soldier manning the armored tank and even an elderly woman who, with a few words and a pointed finger, becomes an informer.
The sniper's main adversary, posing the greatest threat to his survival, is the Free State sniper positioned on the rooftop across the street. This foe has the capability to keep him trapped all night. However, the sniper understands that “morning must not find him wounded on the roof,” as such a situation would spell certain death. Consequently, he is compelled to devise a daring strategy to eliminate his enemy first.
The sniper's solitude on the rooftop underscores his dependence on his own intellect, courage, and abilities to survive. While other soldiers fight with their comrades, such as at the Four Courts and throughout the streets of Dublin, the sniper battles alone. It is entirely his duty to take down the opposing sniper, as no help will come. In his isolation, the sniper draws upon his inner strength to overcome fear and pain, enabling him to continue fighting.
