Why should The Skin I'm In be used in a middle school class?

The Skin I’m in by Sharon Flake would be a relevant book to teach at the middle school level. The subject matter is relevant to any student who’s ever attended school. How many middle school students have been picked on and ridiculed over things they can’t control such as skin color? In addition, don’t they struggle trying to fit in and be liked? The relationship with Miss Saunders is typical too. A teacher does something students don’t like, and it’s never the bully that steps up (so to speak) it’s always their underling. This book would show middle school students problems they face, and perhaps show them alternative choices for dealing with their own situations--at least what to avoid in their own situations.
