Interesting question! In the book My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, a forester came (and soon left) the Gribley Farm.
Although Sam lived in the wilderness, he still encountered a forester one day. When Sam first witnessed the forester, he was startled and “began to shake.” However, he soon realized that he did not have to confront the forester, but that he could avoid the forester instead. Thus, Sam stayed away from his tree home until the forester left.
Sam realized that the forester came to investigate the smoke from Sam’s fires. The forester was a fire warden and there had not been any rain for several weeks. Thus, the forester came to investigate the cause of the smoke. As the text reveals:
“Apparently the smoke from my fire was spotted, and a man [the forester] was sent to check it.”
After not finding anyone or any more fires, the forester left. The forester had investigated the area and his job was complete. There was nothing more for the forester to do. After the forester left, Sam returned to his tree home and made only a "small fire with very dry wood that would not smoke much."
