This reaction is the first step in the glycolysis which is a very important part of the cellular respiration. When Glucose enters the reaction pathway, the ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) with the aid of an enzyme called Hexokinase, will release a phosphate group. This phosphate group will substitute the H in the OH group of Carbon number 6.

The reaction equation can be written as:


Glucose + ATP ---------------> Glucose-6-phosphate + ADP


ADP is called Adenosine diphosphate.


Therefore ADP is formed when ATP is reacted with glucose.
