How should technology serve education?

The obvious answer—computers, projections, even whiteboards—does not penetrate the real inquiry:  What has the idea of advanced technology done to our definition of education?  Since multimedia communication—television in the classroom, etc.—the burden of teachers is not simply the transference of information to the student, but showing the student how to use information toward reaching goals, both individual and societal.  In  Bloom’s taxonomy, remembering must advance to applying, through several stages, and that is where educational technology must pay its way.  It is not enough to simply “send” information to the receptive student; technology should help the teacher show the student how to understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, etc. information, and then to create using that information.  See
