Carbon monoxide can bind to cytochrome oxidase. This enzyme chain is responsible for utilization of oxygen in tissues. Carbon monoxide can bond to the enzyme instead of oxygen.

This stops cells from aerobic respiration and cells divert into anaerobic respiration causing lactic acidosis. This eventually leads to cell death.
