Jerome David Salinger (1919-2010) was born on New Year's Day in Manhattan's West Side of New York City, N. Y. His father, Sol Salinger, was a native of Lithuania and a Jew; his mother, Marie Jillich Salinger, was Irish-Catholic. She later

Salinger did not discover this fact until after his bar mitzvah. Salinger went to public school in Manhattan until enrolling in a private school in 1932. Salinger began writing as a teenager and his novel, The Catcher in the Rye (1951), became one of the most famous books of the second half of the 20th century.
