The name of Miss Emily Grierson's manservant is Tobe. In Faulkner's classic short story "A Rose for Emily," Miss Emily Grierson lives a reclusive life and rarely leaves her decaying, outdated home. The only person who has constant contact with Emily is her black manservant named Tobe, who serves as Emily's gardener and cook. In Part One, the Board of Aldermen holds a special meeting and sends a deputation to Miss Emily's home in an attempt to collect money for her local taxes. However, Miss Emily refuses to pay her taxes and instructs Tobe to see the gentlemen out. Following Miss Emily's death, Tobe is the person who allows Emily's cousins to enter her home and then simply walks through the back door without saying a word after letting them in. After Miss Emily's funeral, a group of citizens break down Emily's attic door and discover that she has been sleeping with what appears to be Homer Barron's skeleton. Interestingly, Tobe never says a word about Emily's strange fetish and is depicted as an obedient, quiet man throughout the short story.

In "A Rose for Emily" there is only person who remains her constant companion.  This is her manservant, Tobe.  He is the one the people blame for the strange smells after her friend, Homer Barron disappears, and the ladies in town are shocked that Miss Emily allows her black servant to keep her kitchen.  Once Miss Emily dies, he opens the door to let the townspeople in, but he leaves and is never seen again.  He is the only person who was present when Miss Emily died, and while he doesn't really talk to anyone else in the town, he does seem to be the only sign of life inside her dark house.
