Friar Laurence is hoping that by marrying Romeo and Juliet the feud between the Montagues and Capulet will finally come to an end.
Ironically he accomplished his goal, however it took Romeo and Juliet dying for their love to resolve the family's hatred for each other.
He hopes by joining the families, he hopes that there will be peace between the Capulets and Montagues. He tells the audience:
In one respect I'll thy assistant be;
For this alliance may so happy prove,
To turn your households' rancour to pure love.
