Student Question
Can you help revise my thesis statement on Robert Louis Stevenson into one sentence?
Quick answer:
Robert Louis Stevenson, despite lacking originality, captivated readers through his vibrant connection with life and art, evolving from a surface-level observer to a deeply committed individual, particularly evident in his passion for Samoa and his literary creations.
I must admit, I really like what you have at the moment, and I think that would be a good basis for your introduction. I am very impressed by phrases such as "skimmed the surface of experience." Do make sure, however, that you haven't unwittingly plagiarised such phrases. It can be very easy to do! Make sure that all you write is your own work, otherwise you need to show that it is a quote by putting it in quotation marks and indicating your source. My suspicion is that you have found this paragraph somewhere and are using it for your essay, but it is really important that you re-write it in your own words.
You are completely right, however, when you indicate that it needs to be cut down to one sentence. Your thesis at the moment combines lots of different elements, and my first suggestion to you...

would be to really consider what the main point is that you wish to make. How is his relationship with Samoa relevant to what you want to say? What is it that you wish to communicate about this author? Answering such questions will help you narrow down your thesis statement and make it simpler and more direct. If it is his work that you wish to focus on, you might want to use a thesis statement like this:
In spite of his lack of originality, Stevenson nevertheless manages to create gripping tales of adventure that reflect his own vigorous relationship with life and art.
If you choose a statement like this, however, you will need to prove that his tales are not original but at the same time you will need to look at how he creates "gripping tales" and how they reflect his relationship with life and art. Always with thesis statements, the rule is, "keep it simple, stupid!" Having a simple, elegant thesis statement means that you are able to focus clearly in your essay on proving what you argue. Good luck!
Can you provide interesting facts about Robert Louis Stevenson for a research paper?
Thesis statement: Though Robert Louis Stevenson lacked originality, he created a rapport with the reader, who senses his enthusiastic embrace of life and art. If Stevenson at first wrote like one who only skimmed the surface of experience, by the end of his life he was passionately committed to his adopted land of Samoa, to his own history, and to the creation of his fiction.
I have just answered a very similar question with an almost identical thesis statement, and so I must warn you too to be very careful of plagiarism. Your thesis statement as it stands looks as if it has been lifted from a website or textbook. You need to make very sure that everything you write is your own work and is not "borrowed" from other sources. If it is, you need to indicate that by putting the quote in quotation marks and indicating the source.
However, generally, by far the most interesting aspect of the life of Robert Louis Stevenson is how he ended his life. He moved to Upolu, one of the Samoan Islands, and bought some land and established his household there, before dying there after trying to return to Scotland twice but failing. We can perhaps interpret this as part of his own desire to live out some of the adventure that he created in his stories.
If you are writing an essay on his life, you might wish to include this, perhaps basing your essay on the following thesis statement:
Robert Louis Stevenson's life was an attempt to live out the adventure that he had created in his stories.
However, I would ask you to think very carefully about what precisely it is you want to communicate in your essay. Is it going to be focussed on his life or his work? What is the main point you want to state? The answers to these questions will help determine your thesis statement. Good luck!
