Since Red Queen is the first in a series by Victoria Aveyard, there are several characters who are introduced in varied levels of importance to be woven into the fictional world of Norta. The main character of Red Queen is Mare Barrow. She is introduced as a "Red," or a commoner without powers, who lives with her family, including her parents, sister Gisa, and brothers Bree, Tramy, and Shade. She is also best friends with another key character, Kilorn. Once it is discovered that Mare has mysterious powers that supersede those of the "Silvers," or those of the ruling class with powers, she is brought to live in the palace and there deals with the king and queen, Tiberias and Elara, as well as their two sons, Cal and Maven, along with Cal's uncle, Julian. While there, Mare faces opponents such as Evangeline, who questions her abilities and has deep animosity towards a person with powers who is also a commoner. Farley is another character who plays an important role in the novel because Farley is a representative of the anti-Silver group, the Scarlet Guard, whom Mare decides to work with along with Kilorn.
