Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls is a novel set in the Ozark Region of Oklahoma. Times are tough and money is tight, but Billy has his heart set on raising a pair of Redbone Coonhounds. They are an outstanding breed of hunting dog. Not only are they handsome, but they are extremely loyal, intelligent, and even-tempered animals. Their natural agility gives them prowess in the field as well as the mountains and water.
Billy sees and ad for these coveted dogs in a magazine. It is from a Kentucky hunting club and offers the dogs for $25 each. Billy is determined to buy a pair of them. However, it takes roughly two years to save the $50 needed to purchase the hounds. When the company is contacted, to see if they will still honor the $25 a head price, Billy learns that the price has changed. The pups will now cost $5 less for each. That means that the cash price has gone from $50 total down to $40 for the pair.
