The novel Where the Red Fern Grows is the story of a boy named Billy Coleman and his love for his two hunting dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann.  The story takes place during the Great Depression in a rural area of Oklahoma.  Because of the time period, it is extremely impressive that Billy was able to raise the fifty dollars needed to buy his two hound pups.  His dedication is also seen during the dogs' training, which takes place in the forests and riverbeds of the wild Oklahoma terrain.
