Squeaky's strolling down Broadway, minding her own business, doing her breathing exercises, when she spots Gretchen and her sidekicks, Mary Louise and Rose, approaching. Straight away, Squeaky thinks that a Dodge City scenario might be imminent, a reference to the small town in Kansas famous for its gun fights during the days of the Old West.
Squeaky's sure that there's going to be trouble because all these girls are antagonistic towards her for one reason or another. Take Mary Louise, for example. She used to be friends with Squeaky; Squeaky befriended her when everyone else used to beat her up. Their mothers used to sing together in the same church choir when they were young girls, so there's been some kind of close connection between their families for a long time. But since she started palling around with Gretchen, Mary Louise has been saying all kinds of mean things about Squeaky behind her back, talking about her like's she a dog.
As for Rose, she has a big mouth when it comes to Raymond, the implication being that she's aways saying insulting things about Squeaky's disabled brother. Fiercely protective of her brother, Squeaky's not about to take Rose's smack talk lying down, and so there's one more reason for her to anticipate trouble as she sees the girls approaching.
