What are the narrator's two nicknames in "Raymond's Run" by Tony Cade Bambara?

Quick answer:

In "Raymond's Run," the narrator Hazel has two nicknames: Squeaky and Mercury. Squeaky refers to her voice, which she describes as squeaky, while Mercury highlights her speed, likening her to the swift Roman messenger god. Hazel prefers the nickname Mercury, as it reflects her reputation as the fastest runner in her neighborhood. The nickname Squeaky is more casually accepted among her peers but not from adults.

In Toni Cade's short story "Raymond's Run," the narrator Hazel has two nicknames: Squeaky and Mercury.

People call her Squeaky simply because she says she has a squeaky voice. She does not seem to like people older than her calling her by that name because when a teacher calls her Squeaky she insists he calls her by her full name Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker. However, she seems to have no problem with people her own age calling her Squeaky. At the beginning of her race she even gees herself up by saying, "Squeaky you must win, you must win, you are the fastest thing in the world."

She says the older kids call her Mercury, which refers to the fact that she is "the swiftest thing in the neighborhood." This seems a much more respectable title and one that gives her the recognition she needs to be thought of "as the baddest thing around."
