Power, published in 1998, tells the story of sixteen-year-old Omishto. The narrative explores her complicated relationship with her mother and stepfather, as well as her deep bond with her relative, Ama. During a visit to Ama's home, a hurricane strikes. Although they both survive the storm, Ama experiences an inexplicable urge to hunt an endangered Florida panther, and Omishto feels drawn to join her. The consequences of their encounter with the panther are challenging, but Omishto learns to better navigate her relationship with her family. Additionally, she becomes more connected with the remaining tribal elders at Kili, their community above the swamp.
