In The Picture of Dorian Gray, what event at the opium den arouses James Vane?

This was the time when, after 18 years of following his tracks, James finally came face to face with Dorian at an Opium Den. He tried to kill him, but then he was shocked to see that this could have not been the same man who drove his sister to suicide because, well, he has not aged in 18 years. That is basically the first time they meet until James meets his demise later on in the story.
