Initially, the doctor refuses to even see Coyotito when Kino and Juana bring him to his home in town. The prejudiced European doctor implies that Kino and his family are animals and refuses to help cure their son without immediate payment. Shortly after leaving the doctor's home, Kino ends up finding the Pearl of the World while he is out diving, and the news of his miraculous discovery quickly spreads through the village and into the town. When the doctor hears the news that Kino found the Pearl of the World, he immediately leaves his patient and declares that Kino is his client. He then begins to daydream about a luxurious life in Paris and imagines how he could use the money from Kino's pearl to pay for his expensive trip back home to Europe. The doctor then travels to Kino's village and administers an enigmatic treatment to Coyotito that seems to initially make him sick. Similar to the other Europeans living in the village, the doctor plans on taking advantage of Kino in exchange for some of the pearl's wealth.
