Book 3, Chapter 15 Summary
In 1985, while living in New York, Solomon receives a call from Hana, who is clearly drunk. He begs her to tell him where she is; her mother and Mozasu are worried about her because they haven’t heard from her in so long.
Solomon encourages Hana to go to school, insisting that she is smarter than many of the people he went to college with. Instead of seriously considering Solomon’s words, Hana keeps asking whether his girlfriend is there. She demands that Solomon cancel his plans with Phoebe so that he can talk to her on the phone instead.
Solomon recalls the pain he felt when Hana left him years ago. He loves Phoebe, but it isn't with the intensity that he felt for Hana. Solomon begs for Hana’s number, but she icily replies that no one is allowed to call her. He then implores her to be careful with her alcohol consumption, and Hana retorts that her only talents are drinking and sex.
When Phoebe arrives at Solomon’s apartment, she listens as Solomon again begs Hana to share her phone number with him. She finally relents and provides a number before hanging up; however, when Solomon calls the number, he realizes it belongs to a Chinese restaurant.
Hana doesn’t call again. Months later, Etsuko discovers that her daughter is bathing men for money. She tracks down the location of Hana’s workplace and calls out to Hana when she leaves work. Hana initially refuses to speak to her mother or to go anywhere with her, but when Etsuko begs for her daughter’s forgiveness, Hana begins to cry. Etsuko kneels on the ground and desperately holds on to her daughter’s knees.
