Book 1, Chapter 15 Summary
Within two months, Kyunghee and Sunja become close friends. Together, the women make three meals a day for their husbands, and Sunja listens to Kyunghee’s dreams of owning her own business selling kimchi and pickles.
Sunja accompanies Kyunghee to the butcher to obtain the meat needed for the day’s meal preparation and watches as her new “sister” expertly conducts business. Kyunghee orders both shin bones and a bit of meat but realizes upon opening her wallet that she cannot afford the meat. The butcher, Tanaka, asks Kyunghee what recipe she is preparing and then slips half of the meat back into Kyunghee’s package, adding that it is for “the baby,” nodding toward Sunja.
Outside the shop, Kyunghee again shares her dreams of owning her own profitable business. Sunja urges her to get started and says that she has a little money that they could use to buy the start-up necessities. Kyunghee insists that Yoseb would never allow it because of his “old-fashioned” ways. Sunja recognizes that her sister-in-law is “heartbroken about what she could not have.”
