Paul Newman was an actor with whom Ponyboy could identify. One of the things Newman is most remembered for is the rebellious nature of so many of the characters that he played.

Examples of this include his role in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke, in which he plays a Southern chain gang member who repeatedly escapes from jail.

Hud, which was made in 1963, depicts conflict in a family, which was something that Ponyboy could relate to. In this film, Newman played the role of Hud, who was the selfish-yet-ambitious son of a rancher.

Another example of a role for which Ponyboy could idolize Newman was his portrayal of "Fast Eddie" in The Hustler, in which he was trying to hit the big time with no regard for the law.

Newman died of cancer in 2008.
