The main character in Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper, fifth-grader Melody Brooks, is also the narrator. She was born with cerebral palsy which affects her body’s ability to talk and walk, and the book is about her life and how this condition affects how she is able to live and relate to those around her. Although some of the other characters question her abilities, we learn that Melody has a photographic memory and a sharp brain. She is very capable in many ways and with the right resources is able to achieve a lot.
Other important characters are Diane Brooks, Melody’s mother, who advocates for her and tries to make sure she gets an education and other resources and Penny Brooks, Melody’s younger sister who reminds Melody of all the things she herself is unable to do. The other family member is Chuck, Melody’s father. Mrs V (Mrs Violet Valencia), their neighbor, is an important part of Melody’s life as not only does she care for her after school, she constantly encourages and believes in her.
Outside the family, the key characters are other children in the school (for example Rose Spencer, Molly North, Claire Wilson), teachers and assistants (such as Mr Dimming, and Melody’s personal assistant, Catherine) as well as former teachers and pupils.
