Our Town Writing Assignment

Our Town writing. Write a letter from Emily’s point of view after she has died. You may address your letter to George or to her four-year-old son (or you may do both for extra credit if you have time). Emily’s purpose will be to advise her husband or child about how to live the rest of their lives—what they should strive for, do, consider important, etc. In your letter be sure to address the following themes from Our Town. How you incorporate each theme is up to you. Although quality is more important than quantity, be sure that the letter is long enough to give reasonable, meaningful advice that truly addresses these issues and captures the spirit of the play.

Themes:

  • Love
  • Happiness
  • Death
  • Daily Routine
  • Being Average
  • Life

About

Students practice persona writing by writing a letter from Emily's point of view after she has died. Persona writing is an effective way to help students understand and express characterization and theme.
