Themes and Characters
The quest for vengeance can be a perilous journey:
Maj witnessed a sudden eruption of perspiration glistening on Alain's brow, as if a mask had slipped from his face. In an instant, his virtual guise disintegrated, revealing Alain in all his unrestrained chaos. He staggered, his eyes clouded and pupils unnaturally wide, as though trapped in a fixed, joyless grimace. His head remained eerily still, as if immobilized by an invisible brace, while the rest of his body flailed wildly in all directions.
The Villain's Illusion
Alain Thurston seemed destined to play the villain in One Is the Loneliest Number, yet his arrogance is a mere shadow compared to reality's harsh light. Roddy, despite his folly, possesses enough wit to recognize Alain's machinations aimed at manipulating him.
The Craft of Creation
Maj, known as Madeline Greene, is part of the Group of Seven, curiously composed of nine high school enthusiasts. They immerse themselves in crafting intricate simulations within their "playrooms"—web pages, each a masterpiece of detail. Maj's passion lies in the meticulous creation of aircraft, while others recreate scenes of historical battles, automobiles, or steam-powered engines. These young artists critique one another's work, their geographical distance bridged by the shared universe of their digital playrooms.
Maj also belongs to the Net Force Explorers, a youthful assembly under the wing of the FBI's Net Force, dedicated to battling cybercrime. Yet, unlike many of her peers, Maj's world isn't confined to the web. Her life is a bustling tapestry of family dynamics, including siblings who devour every edible morsel in sight, and her devotion to playing the viola. Her musical pursuits often vie for her time against the allure of the digital realm.
The Saboteur's Deception
When Roddy L'Officier disrupts her simulation, Maj is yet unaware of how pivotal her ties to Net Force are about to become. Alain Thurston, who orchestrated Roddy's inclusion in the Group of Seven, believed Roddy "was one of those people around whom life would never be dull." Yet, "Roddy looked dull enough: big but pudgy for seventeen, with a blobby, unfinished look to him, wearing an unprepossessing face in which nothing but his eyes seemed alive."
Red Herrings and Reality
Initially, Alain appears to be the antagonist in One Is the Loneliest Number, having egged on Roddy to dismantle Maj's simulation. Roddy, socially inept, genuinely believes his actions were a favor to Maj, exposing the vulnerabilities in her security. Oblivious to a more considerate approach, he never considered simply pointing out the flaws.
Alain was coasting through his junior year, adhering to a routine of minimal compliance. He attended classes, occupied assigned seats, and engaged minimally with the coursework, both real and virtual—typically the bare minimum. Alain and his cronies dubbed this the Minimum Assured Destruction plan, ensuring that by cooperating just enough with school authorities, they would suffer the least intellectual depletion.
The Unveiling of Truth
Alain fancies himself a puppet master, more astute than his peers. Yet his laziness and ignorance betray his ambition. Unlike Alain, Roddy is a thinker, albeit awkward and misguided, but he sees through Alain's ploys.
Ultimately, Alain emerges as a "red herring," a misleading suspect in the mystery. The true threat to global security is the hapless, egotistical Roddy, not Alain, who lands in a hospital after revealing Roddy's dangerous discovery in virtual reality to a terrorist.
The Surprising Redemption
Yet even here, One Is the Loneliest Number defies predictability. Roddy's reprehensible acts, fueled by juvenile revenge, are poorly conceived. Blaming Maj for his own actions, he justifies his digital assault as payback for a perceived slight....

While this paints him as contemptible, his behavior echoes his mother's influence, casting a shadow of pity over his figure. Roddy's invitation to his extraordinary playroom—a whimsical domain of caves, atriums, and fantastical creatures—elicits unexpected admiration.
For the first time, sarcastic Roddy, notorious for his harsh lessons, finds himself esteemed. Corporate entities seek his insights, and job offers materialize. Inept as he may be, Roddy begins to cultivate self-respect and recognizes his place in the world, finding acceptance within the community of computer programmers. He had long been "the loneliest number," ensnared in habitual isolation. His universal teenage longing for acceptance transforms him from a villain to a sympathetic youth. Even Maj, twice victimized and gravely ill due to his malice, finds it within her heart to empathize with him.
In the thrilling conclusion of One Is the Loneliest Number, the character of Roddy teeters on the brink of redemption, yet finds himself ensnared by someone far more sinister. While Roddy may be a misguided soul striking out against the innocent, Rachel Holloran stands as a cold-blooded killer. Under the guise of a Net Force operative, she cunningly learns of Roddy's breakthrough from Alain and plots to entrap him. Through deceit, she coerces Roddy into divulging his secret, threatening him with imprisonment. Her sinister plan is to peddle his discovery to terrorists, cash in, and vanish without a trace. In her scheme, Roddy is but a pawn, marked for death to ensure the terrorists retain his web-transmitted infection secret.
The Power of Allies
Fortuitously, Maj's ties to Net Force prove invaluable. Confronting Roddy alone is perilous, but the specter of battling international terrorists looms even more lethal. Enter Mark Gridley, the Net Force director's son and formerly an assistant to the erstwhile director Michaels. Despite succumbing to a trap that ensnares him with an infection, Mark proves indispensable. He enlists Charlie Davis, a budding medic, and together with Maj, their combined expertise in simulations, medicine, and technology forges a formidable alliance. This trio holds the key to unraveling Roddy's machinations.
Youthful Resolve
As is the hallmark of the Net Force series, the intrepid youths spearhead the charge, despite warnings from James Winters, the Explorers' director, who advises caution due to the grave dangers involved. Driven by an unwavering moral compass, they resolve to confront Roddy head-on, as no one else possesses their access to his digital domain. Their fearless efforts stand as a bulwark against terrorists who could wield a terrifying new weapon if unchecked. Though Maj and Mark suffer severe illness, they embrace the peril to safeguard others, enduring their afflictions with as much dignity as possible, even through bouts of nausea. Unexpectedly, Roddy emerges as an ally, favoring civilization, and aids the genuine Net Force in ensnaring Holloran.
