In chapter 8 of Old Yeller, Burn Sanderson shows up at Travis's cabin saying that he is missing one of his cattle dogs and heard that it may be at the Coates' ranch. As a rancher who can't afford to hire ranch hands, Burn uses dogs to help him herd his cattle. Apparently, Old Yeller was the best of his dogs and he has been searching for him. Travis is reasonably alarmed at the thought of losing their beloved companion. However, Mama says that they need to give him back to his rightful owner.

When Burn sees how much the dog means to the two boys he has a change of heart. He remarks that without the boys' father around, the family needs all the protection that they can get. Perhaps they could keep Old Yeller until Papa gets back. However. Mama thinks that it would be best if Burn takes his dog back now since it will only be harder on the boys if he has to do so later.

This causes Little Arliss to throw a fit. Burn comes to understand that the dog means more to the boys than he ever could to him. He graciously decides to let the family keep Old Yeller in exchange for a homecooked meal.
