What happened when Homer tested his Zincoshine in October Sky and how did it benefit his mother?

Homer mixed the white lightning (moonshine) with the zinc sulfide and got what he called kind of a gray goopy material that could be molded into whatever shape he wanted.  He smushed some into a paper towel roll and let it dry beneath the water heater where he usually did.

Then he tossed it in the water heater and it exploded with rather serious force blowing the door open, dislodging the stove pipe and filling the entire house with thick white smoke.

In the end, his mother was happy because she could now pressure Homer's dad to get her an electric water heater so she wouldn't have to worry about this silly coal fired one any longer.
