Terry O'Sullivan is really Tony Spinelli, an Italian man.

Maggie is tired of going to the Clover Leaf Social Club dances with her friend Anna and Anna's boyfriend Jack. It seems like every week she has to be the third wheel. So it's surprising to Anna when Maggie says that she has a date this week. She appears at the club with a man who calls himself Terry O'Sullivan.

Terry draws the attention of Dempsey Donovan. He's a leader in the Give and Take Athletic Association where the social club holds its dances. He's also on the police force. He begins to ask Terry questions and, for him, the answers aren't adding up. The two men go into the back room to fight and Maggie runs after them.

She stops them and warns Dempsey that Terry has a gun. He's not Terry at all. He's Tony Spinelli and he's Italian, not Irish. She asked him to pretend to be Irish so that he could take her to the dance. (She also says that all Italian people carry knives, which is why she stopped them from fighting.)
