R.S. Thomas short poem "Ninetieth Birthday" whose timeless theme deals with the differences that exist between the generations.  The speaker, an old Welsh woman born around 1871 (based on the publication dates), who explains her life and the things that have changed during her lifetime.  Technology has changed and she is almost warning the next generation about the implications of these changes: Cars and tractors have replaced horses. She is facing a modern world much different than the world she knows, and with the wisdom of her age, explains that doesn't make it a better time. The changes the woman encounters are similar to other works by Thomas’ who often explores the changes occurring in the Welsh culture and language.
