Excerpt
Elie & Moche the Beadle
- What was their connection? Elie sought to learn more about the mystic side of his faith, and Moche decided to help him. They studied in secret.
1001 Gates
- What does this mean? Moche was referring to the fact that each person has to find his or her own sense of personal truth. What is true for one person might not be true for another.
First Deportation: Foreign Jews in Hungary
- Affected Moche, but he escaped and returned to warn others. They did not believe him.
New Restrictions
- Jews had to stay home for 3 days. Jews couldn’t own any objects of value. Jews must wear yellow stars. Jews couldn’t eat at restaurants, ride the train, attend religious services, or be in public after 6 pm. Jews must live in “ghettos”, or separated areas for Jews only.
The Second Deportation: All Jews
- All Jews were given only one day’s notice to prepare to leave. Hungarian police forced them to leave, marching them at a quick pace away from their homes. Many Jews were hit or struck with rifles, or beaten for no reason other than that they were Jewish. They were searched for and stripped of all valuables.
