Nelson Mandela spearheaded a number of groups and campaigns during his political life, beginning with the Youth League of the African National Congress in 1944. However, he is best known for his leadership of the Umknonto we Sizwe, a militant anti-government group which he co-founded in 1961. As leader of this group, Mandela was involved in a sustained campaign of sabotage in an attempt to overthrow the government, disagreeing with its views on apartheid and believing it to be entirely undemocratic. For this work, Mandela was sentenced to life in prison.

After his release from prison in 1990, Mandela was to lead another group—this time, the ANC, the African National Congress. As leader of this political party, Mandela became President of South Africa.
