Actually, the abbey in the novel where the murders take place is a fictional abbey in northern Italy along the Apennines Mountains. This is the abbey William and Adso visit. Adso is from the Benedictine abbey of Melk which is located on the banks of the Danube River in Austria, but it is not the abbey that they visit in the book.
