Jimmy is the main character in the novel, a complex and morally uncertain individual who sometimes earns the reader's sympathy and at other times, their disdain. As a child, "If he was aware there were rules—in the subway, on the streets, in a movie theater—he never showed it." His pent-up energy often lands young Jimmy in trouble, like the incident where he leaps off the subway platform to retrieve a hockey ball after Sean's errant throw—"onto the track, down there with the mice and the rats and the third rail." Not long after marrying the beautiful, pregnant Puerto Rican Marita at seventeen, Jimmy is imprisoned for robbery. Marita passes away from cancer during his incarceration, and upon his release, he resolves to reform, aiming to be a devoted father to Katie. He marries Annabeth, a strong and reliable woman, and spends the remainder of his life managing a corner grocery store in the Flats. Jimmy's love for Katie serves as his moral guide, as he reveals while preparing for the funeral:

I love you in truth more than I loved your mother, your sisters, than Annabeth, so help me God. And I love them deeply, but I love you most because when I came back from prison and sat with you in the kitchen, we were the last two people on earth . . . . We built our lives into something good enough so that one day we weren't afraid, we weren't forlorn.

The loss of Katie drives Jimmy back to the reckless, rule-defying persona of his youth.

Sean, the detective in pursuit of the truth, acts more as a catalyst for the story than a main character. His personal life is in turmoil after discovering his wife, Lauren, had an affair. When she becomes pregnant, he doubts the child's paternity, leading Lauren to leave him. Their only communication, even after the baby's birth, consists of her silent phone calls from the road, where she refuses to speak, leaving Sean to desperately try to find the words to bring them back together. Sean has not confided in anyone about his personal turmoil—not his parents, his superior, nor the psychologist assigned to him at work. Working on the case of Jimmy's daughter—and opening up to Annabeth—enables Sean to confront his own past, his relationship with his parents, and his true feelings for his wife and daughter.

Dave transitions from a troubled childhood to an adolescence marked by athletic success. As a baseball star, he temporarily escapes the label of an abused child. He even accepts Jimmy's altered version of their past, which dismisses their friendship and his kidnapping: "They had never spent a year of Saturdays hanging with Sean Devine, playing war in the gravel pits off Harvest, jumping roof to roof from the industrial garages near Pope Park. . . . That car had never driven up Gannon Street, smelling of apples." Dave marries Celeste, a distant relative of Annabeth, and they enjoy a strong marriage with a cherished son. Dave manages to function in society because he has compartmentalized his mind. He identifies two versions of himself: "the Boy" and "the Boy Who'd Escaped from Wolves and Grown Up." However, Celeste's love and loyalty waver when Dave returns home one morning, bloodied, with an unconvincing story. She begins to doubt her understanding of Dave, realizing there may be more to him, leading to tragic consequences.

Other crucial characters in the novel include Katie Marcus, her fiancé Brendan Harris, and his younger brother, Silent Ray Harris. Katie is vividly portrayed, even though her murder occurs soon after the flashback...

to 1975. At nineteen, she is stunning and devoted to her family, yet she plans to elope to Las Vegas with Brendan, whom her father detests. Jimmy has only one demand of Katie: "Stay away from Harrises." Without any rationale, when Katie and Brendan fall deeply in love, they believe their only choice is to leave East Buckingham. Her final night is depicted in detail—a night filled with drinks and excitement with her two closest childhood friends, who insist on giving her a memorable girls' night out before she elopes with Brendan.

Brendan and his younger brother, Silent Ray, are also central to the story. Brendan is a gentle, quiet young man who "has never met anyone who doesn't like him." Yet, he feels "a quiet, coiled hatred" from Jimmy Marcus, unaware of Brendan's relationship with Katie. Silent Ray, though mute, is not deaf, highlighting Brendan's patience and affection as he communicates with Ray through sign language to help him feel less isolated. Despite this, Ray does not elicit sympathy from others. As one person notes, "Something lived in Ray's dead face and silent mouth that you just wanted to beat out with a hammer." Brendan, the caring brother and fiancé, becomes an early suspect in Katie's murder, adding layers of irony as the story unfolds.

Big Wolf

Big Wolf is the name Dave uses for Henry, one of the men who abducted him during his childhood. As the driver, Big Wolf, along with his accomplice Greasy Wolf, pretends to be a police officer to lure Dave into their vehicle. Big Wolf evades capture for the kidnapping and assault of Dave. He is later rumored to have died in a car accident.

Celeste Boyle

Celeste is the wife of Dave Boyle, mother to Michael, and first cousin to Annabeth Marcus. She is devoted to Dave but becomes deeply disturbed when he arrives home one night, bloodied and hurt. She doubts his story of being mugged and defending himself. Eventually, she becomes convinced that Dave killed Katie. When she shares her suspicions with Jimmy, it confirms his own, leading him to murder Dave. Unaware that her disclosure would result in murder, Celeste later regrets her actions and holds Jimmy accountable for her husband's death.

Dave Boyle

Dave Boyle is a weak childhood friend of Jimmy and Sean, neither of whom seems to be fond of him. Like Jimmy, he resides in the Flats, a working-class neighborhood in East Buckingham, Boston. Sean only knows Dave because he accompanies Jimmy during visits to Sean's home.

While fighting in the street near Sean's house, two men pretending to be police officers abduct Dave. They place him in their car, claiming they will take him home to his mother. Instead, Dave suffers sexual abuse from the men he names Big Wolf and Greasy Wolf. Left alone in a cellar, Dave manages to escape and returns home after four days, deeply traumatized by the ordeal.

He is married to Celeste and has a son named Michael. Dave never fully discloses the events of his childhood to her. Internally, he battles with his own impulses, though he swears never to act on them. These inner struggles manifest when, after a night of heavy drinking, he kills August Larson. Dave finds Larson with a young male prostitute and unleashes his repressed fury on Larson. Despite being injured in the altercation, Dave keeps the truth to himself.

Due to Dave's unexplained injuries, Celeste suspects him of murdering Jimmy's daughter, Katie, and eventually leaves him. Jimmy also suspects Dave of the murder. Dave eventually confesses to killing August Larson, but Jimmy does not believe him. After Dave is killed, his body is weighed down and submerged in the Mystic River.

Michael Boyle

Michael is the eight-year-old son of Dave and Celeste Boyle. Like his father, he is a skilled baseball player, excelling as a catcher.

Diane Cestra

Diane is one of Katie Marcus's closest friends. Together with Eve Pigeon, she spends a final night out with Katie before her planned departure to Las Vegas. Instead of returning home with Katie, Diane stays over at Eve's house, leaving Katie to drive home by herself.

Lauren Devine

Lauren Devine is married to Sean Devine. They met during college, and she works as a stage manager for touring productions like Lord of the Dance. Throughout much of the book, Sean and Lauren are apart, partly due to her affair with another man. They have a daughter named Nora, but Sean is uncertain of his paternity until the book concludes. Throughout the novel, Lauren makes silent phone calls to Sean from the road. Although he talks to her, she remains silent. After Sean faces being held at gunpoint by Johnny O'Shea, he begins to reconcile with Lauren, which she accepts. By the novel's end, the couple is reunited.

Sean Devine

At the start of Mystic River, Sean is about ten years old, living in the Point, a working-class neighborhood in East Buckingham, Boston. He plays with Jimmy Marcus and Dave Boyle. The boys only play together on Saturdays because Sean attends a Catholic school, while Jimmy and Dave go to public school. Sean is sometimes uneasy with Jimmy's recklessness and Dave's neediness. However, when Dave is abducted right in front of him by men pretending to be police officers, Sean carries a lifelong guilt about the event.

After completing college, Sean becomes a successful state trooper. However, his marriage to Lauren suffers due to her affair. Just before the events of Mystic River, Sean faces suspension and probation for issuing unwarranted parking tickets to his wife's lover. The murder of Katie Marcus is his first case back with his partner, Whitey Powers. While investigating, Sean grapples with his past, particularly his failure to get into the car with the kidnappers. Unlike his partner, Sean hesitates to suspect Dave Boyle as Katie's murderer.

Sean discovers the clue that leads to the real murderers: mute Ray Harris and his accomplice, Johnny O'Shea. Arresting them and confronting Johnny's gun gives Sean a new perspective, allowing him to take steps toward reconciling with his wife and child. Sean also realizes that Jimmy killed Dave and vows to arrest him for the crime someday.

Greasy Wolf

Dave refers to George, one of the individuals who abducted him as a child, as "Greasy Wolf." George was the passenger in a car that posed as a police vehicle on Sean's street. Although he was eventually apprehended by the authorities, he took his own life before facing prosecution.

Brendan Harris

Brendan Harris is Ray Harris's older brother and the son of Esther and Just Ray Harris. At around nineteen years old, he is romantically involved with Katie Marcus. The couple has been secretly seeing each other and plans to marry in Las Vegas. After Katie's murder, Sean Devine and Whitey Powers briefly suspect Brendan, but neither truly believes he is responsible for her death. Ultimately, Brendan discovers that his brother and a friend were the ones who killed Katie, just as Sean and Whitey arrive to arrest them.

Ray Harris Jr.

Ray, the younger brother of Brendan, is mute and the son of Esther and Just Ray Harris. His father had betrayed Jimmy Marcus, leading to Jimmy's incarceration and eventually Just Ray's murder at Jimmy's hands. Ray, along with his friend Johnny O'Shea, kills Katie to prevent his brother from leaving.

Ray Harris Sr.

See Just Ray

Just Ray

Although Just Ray does not appear alive in Mystic River, his influence is significant. He is Esther Harris's husband and the father of Brendan and Ray Harris Jr. Just Ray led a life of crime alongside Jimmy Marcus but also held legitimate jobs at times. He vanished in 1987 while Esther was expecting Silent Ray. His family believes he abandoned them, as they receive a monthly envelope containing five hundred dollars postmarked from New York. In truth, Jimmy killed Just Ray for providing information to the police, leading to Jimmy's arrest and imprisonment. Jimmy is the one sending the monthly payments. Due to their strained relationship, Jimmy disapproves of Brendan and forbids his daughter from associating with him.

August Larson

August is the man whom Dave kills. He is with Little Vince, a local child prostitute, when Dave encounters and murders him. Initially, Dave places August's body in his own trunk but later transfers it to August's Cadillac, where it is eventually discovered.

Annabeth Marcus

Annabeth is the second wife of Jimmy Marcus and the mother of his two daughters, Sara and Nadine. She is the only daughter of Theo Savage, sister to the Savage brothers, including Val and Chuck, and a first cousin to Celeste Boyle. Throughout the narrative, Annabeth's stern personality is emphasized. At one point, Sean comments, "Anyone ever tell you that you're a hard woman?" to which she responds, "All the time." Annabeth is deeply supportive of her husband and close family. Despite her disdain for showing vulnerability, she allows Celeste and others to care for her following Katie's death. Annabeth is aware that Jimmy intends to kill Dave and could have intervened, but she chooses not to because she views Dave as weak.

Jimmy Marcus

In the opening of Mystic River, Jimmy is about eleven years old. As an only child, he resides in the lower working-class area known as the Flats in East Buckingham. Jimmy is a rebellious child who enjoys taking significant risks. Nevertheless, he includes Dave Boyle, who is easily influenced and lacks many friends, in his activities.

Jimmy's streetwise nature saves him from being abducted. When two men pretending to be police officers approach, he escapes by lying and claiming he lives nearby. The men end up kidnapping Dave, and Jimmy doubts Dave will return until he actually does. Even as a youngster, Jimmy harbors resentment towards Sean and his affluence. After the kidnapping incident, Jimmy steals a new baseball glove from Sean's bed when he visits Sean's house, a resentment that affects their relationship into adulthood.

Unlike Sean and Dave, Jimmy struggles academically. He is expelled from one school for car theft and is transferred to another. By seventeen, Jimmy leads a criminal gang. He meets and marries his first wife, Marita, with whom he has his first daughter, Katie. However, after a robbery, Jimmy is betrayed by an associate, Just Ray Harris. Choosing not to implicate his other friends, Jimmy serves a few years in prison. During his incarceration, Marita succumbs to skin cancer.

After his release, Jimmy becomes a single father to Katie. He later marries Annabeth, and they have two more daughters, Nadine and Sara. To provide for them, he abandons his criminal activities and runs a legitimate corner store. Secretly, he avenges Just Ray by killing him, but he also arranges for monthly financial support to be sent to Just Ray's family, partly to maintain the illusion that Just Ray is still alive.

Jimmy is deeply connected to Katie, and her death leaves him shattered. He turns to his family, including his eccentric brothers-in-law, Val and Chuck Savage, to uncover the truth about her murderer. When Celeste suggests that Dave is responsible for Katie's death, Jimmy kills Dave. Although he feels a slight twinge of regret upon discovering the truth, he refuses to confess to his actions. Instead, he opts to return to his life of crime.

Katie Marcus

Katie is the nineteen-year-old daughter of Jimmy Marcus and his first wife, Marita. She is the stepdaughter of Annabeth Marcus. Katie and her father share a very close bond. Her mother passed away while her father was incarcerated, and after his release, Katie and Jimmy formed a strong relationship. Despite their closeness, Katie doesn't disclose her romantic relationship and plans to elope to Las Vegas with Brendan Harris to her father. Tragically, before she can carry out her plan, she is killed by Brendan's brother, Ray, and his friend Johnny O'Shea. Her death is central to the plot of Mystic River.

Marita Marcus

Marita is Jimmy's first wife and Katie's mother. She dies while Jimmy is serving his prison sentence. Her loss lingers with him throughout the novel, and he privately acknowledges that he loved her more than he loves Annabeth.

Bobby O'Donnell

Bobby is a young, small-time crime boss involved in various illegal activities, including running prostitution rings and serving as neighborhood muscle. He had been dating Katie Marcus, who considered the relationship over, though Bobby did not share this view. Due to their past relationship, Bobby becomes an initial suspect in her murder, but it is later revealed that he was jailed for a drunk driving offense at the time of her death.

Johnny O'Shea

Eve Pigeon

Sergeant Whitey Powers

Whitey is Sean Devine's partner in the investigation of Katie Marcus's murder. As a seasoned sergeant, Whitey is well-versed in handling similar cases and is committed to uncovering the truth. He questions Sean's reasons for being involved in the case, particularly given his connections to Jimmy and Dave, but he also leverages these connections to help solve the crime.

Val Savage

Val Savage is the son of Theo Savage and the brother of Annabeth Marcus. He is also the brother-in-law of Jimmy Marcus. Similar to the other Savage brothers, Val is notably short and somewhat unstable. He is engaged in illegal activities and was part of Jimmy's gang before Jimmy's imprisonment. Val continues to show strong loyalty to Jimmy, assisting him in the murder of Dave and disposing of the body in the Mystic River.

Silent Ray

Refer to Ray Harris Jr.

Vincent

Vincent, often referred to as Little Vince, is a young male sex worker. A confrontation between Little Vince and August Larson leads Dave to kill August. Following August's death, Little Vince vanishes from East Buckingham.
