Themes: Structure
My Ántonia is not a novel with a strict structure. Instead, it unfolds in a loosely organized yet concentrated series of episodes. Much like a painting that includes a small, seemingly insignificant window revealing a vast landscape or a distant city, this collection of memories is at times interrupted by stories from different eras and lives. The tragic history of Peter and Pavel, along with the humble yet miraculous tale of Blind d'Arnault, serve as such windows that expand the portrayal of the American Great Plains during the immigration period. Critics who see Ántonia as the central focus of the novel find these narrative interruptions problematic, as well as the lengthy section that explores Jim's life in Lincoln and his relationship with Lena Lingard.
