General Zaroff has expert knowledge of the island and hunts Rainsford using the smallest caliber pistol. The general is also allowed to use his pack of tracking dogs and his servant, Ivan. Without a gun or in-depth knowledge of his surroundings, Rainsford is at a severe disadvantage and must rely on his skills as a survivalist and expert hunter. Rainsford ends up using the hunting knife to chop down several trees, sharpen sticks, and build traps in order to slow down and injure the general. Fortunately, Rainsford proves that he is a better hunter by surviving three days on the island and defeating General Zaroff in hand-to-hand combat at the end of the story.
