Student Question

How long does Zaroff give Rainsford to prepare for the hunt in "The Most Dangerous Game"?

Quick answer:

Zaroff gives Rainsford until dusk to prepare for the hunt. After explaining his hunting plans, Zaroff allows Rainsford a night's sleep and informs him the next day that they will "hunt tonight." Rainsford is given the afternoon to get a head start, as Zaroff plans to take his usual siesta after lunch and will not begin the hunt until dusk.

After Zaroff disclosed to Rainsford about his new type of hunting, he allowed Rainsford a good night's sleep. Zaroff did not appear until after noon the next day, when he announced that the two would "hunt tonight." Rainsford demanded that he be allowed to leave, but Zaroff made it clear that he would be the hunter--and Rainsford the prey--later that evening. Rainsford's only option was to face the wrath of Ivan if he chose not to go along with Zaroff's plan. Zaroff told Rainsford that he would take his usual "siesta" after lunch and would not "follow till dusk." So, Rainsford had most of the afternoon to get a head start on his Cossack pursuer.
