Foreshadowing is a big part of "The Most Dangerous Game." The first quote you have listed is a great example. The words snarled and ragged carry dark connotations. We think of danger and wild, uncivilized inhabitants. The General's appearance is in direct contradiction to the island's appearance. Of course, we learn later that the General's attitudes and actions are mirrored in the wild landscape. Rainsford might have thought he would find wild and uncivilized people on the island. Little did he know when he met the seemingly sophisticated General that he had met someone far more dangerous. Rainsford's first inklings that the General might not be what he appeared may have come at dinner. Most people feel uncomfortable when some appraises them narrowly. Of course, we know the General was looking for signs that Rainsford would be a good subject for his game. While Rainsford doesn't know why the General is intent, he certainly senses that something is wrong.
