Student Question
What is Ernie's crime in Monster and is he guilty?
Quick answer:
In Monster, Ernie has been caught sticking up a jewelry store. He took money and jewelry from the store and then locked the two employees in the back room with a padlock they used on the front gates. We know that Ernie is guilty because the police caught him in the act after he accidentally locked himself in the store.
If there’s still more than a hint of reasonable doubt as to Steve Harmon’s guilt, there’s none whatsoever in the case of Ernie, a jewelry thief brought into jail while Steve’s awaiting trial. Whereas the police had to rely on informants to establish Steve’s alleged involvement in the holdup of Mr. Nesbitt’s drugstore, in the case of Ernie, they were fortunate enough to catch him red-handed.
Ernie robbed the jewelry store, stealing cash and jewelry before locking the store’s two employees in the back room by using a padlock that had been on the front gates. But Ernie couldn’t get out because the employees he’d locked up had a buzzer to the front door, and he didn’t know where it was. He waited for two whole hours while people came and tried to get into the store before he finally, embarrassingly, had to call the police.
Somewhat improbably, Ernie claims that he isn’t guilty, as he didn’t—in fact, couldn’t—take anything out of the store. But that cuts no ice with the police, who’ve charged him with armed robbery, unlawful detention, possession of a deadly weapon, assault, and menacing. Ernie may not be a master criminal, but he's a criminal all the same, and it's difficult to see how he can avoid being sent to prison.
