Annie knew that the Keller family had allowed Helen to have her own way for many years.  She also knew that in order for her to help and teach Helen that boundaries needed to be established.  At mealtimes, Helen grabbed food with her hand from the plate of any family member she liked.  She attempted to do this with Annie's plate.  Anne would not let Helen take any food.  She even grabbed Helen's wrists to stop her.  Kate, Helen's mother, suggested that Annie let Helen eat from the plate because it was not worth her throwing a tantrum.  This was one of the first times that Helen had not been able to do whatever she wanted.  Annie's determination was the first step in helping Helen to change her behavior.
