Why does Helen hide the key in The Miracle Worker?

It's not long after Annie Sullivan's arrival at the Kellers' place, and Helen is still deeply suspicious of her new teacher. It seems extraordinary given the close bond they will come to develop later, but for now the relationship between Annie and Helen is difficult, to say the least.

The main problem seems to be that Helen finds it impossible to deal with Annie's hands-on teaching methods. Annie physically interacts with Helen as part of her strenuous efforts to teach her sign language. She also doesn't hesitate to chastise Helen physically if she misbehaves. Where does Helen place the key before dropping it into the well in The Miracle Worker?

Keys are an important symbol in the play. They represent Annie's opening up of Helen's mind through the power of education. But that only comes about after a lot of patience on Annie's part and many false starts. One example of this occurs when Annie goes up to Helen's room and spells the words "doll" and "cake" for her.

However, Helen's in no mood for learning. She slaps Annie in the face before running off and locking her in the room. Poor Annie has to be rescued from the locked room using a ladder placed outside the window.

Realizing that she's likely to get into serious trouble, Helen hides the key to her bedroom door inside her mouth. When she's certain that there's no one around, she takes the key out of her mouth and drops it down a well.
