Miguel de Cervantes’s models for Exemplary Novels were Giovanni Boccaccio and Matteo Bandello. There had been short fictions before in Cervantes’s work. “Meddlesome Curiosity” had been embodied in Don Quixote de la Mancha, as had “The Captive’s Tale,” and there had been short stories in La Galatea. The stories in Exemplary Novels were written to stand alone, neither to interrupt, however fruitfully, a longer narrative, nor to form part of a cycle.
