I believe you may be referring to Magister Reese who teaches Alyce to read and write. At first, he pretends to teach her cat, Purr, because he sees how shy and isolated Alyce is. The second visitor is the midwife who comes to the inn to give Magister Reese information about midwifery. She sees Alyce and asks Magister Reese if he's seen her apprentice, knowing Alyce probably won't talk to her directly about coming back to resume her job as an apprentice. This opens the door for Alyce to go back, which she eventually does.
