Answers

1. Casaubon suffers not only from heart disease, but also from self-doubt. He already feels his wife is attracted to Ladislaw's personality. Casaubon now suspects she shows affection for him only because he may die at any time.

2. Lydgate is at the hospital when Dorothea goes to his home to seek information about her husband's condition. Rosamond and Ladislaw are alone. Ladislaw is afraid the woman he worships, Dorothea, will think the less of him for being entertained by another woman without the proper chaperon present.

3. Lydgate explains the financial difficulties in starting the new hospital and asks for Dorothea's support. She readily agrees to donate 200 pounds a year.

4. People are suspicious of Lydgate: he is new to the area; his mentor at the new hospital is the much disliked Bulstrode; and he has brought with him from Paris new and strange medical practices.

5. Bulstrode is disliked because he is a zealously religious man, tends to be lordly and overbearing, is involved with trade, and-most importantly-has brought in an outsider (Lydgate) to be the chief medical superintendent of the new hospital.

6. Farebrother kindly warns Lydgate to distance himself as much as possible from Bulstrode so as not to fall under the shadow of the town's dislike for him.

7. Ladislaw is quietly suffering from wanting to see Dorothea. Knowing he cannot see her alone, he resolves to go to church when she will be there. He not only will have the chance to see her there, but he might succeed in vexing Casaubon by his appearance.

8. Ladislaw is not accepted because he is new to the area; few know anything about his family or background; he is aligned with Brooke in politics; and the rumor is that his second cousin wants nothing to do with him.

9. When not giving fiery speeches in favor of Reform on behalf of his benefactor, Brooke, or working as the editor of Brooke's paper, he visits with Miss Noble or leads the children on expeditions, as well as visiting with both the Lydgates.

10. Rosamond is pregnant. Lydgate does not want her to worry that there is a bill he cannot pay. He does not tell her.
