Student Question
How would you feel if you were Matilda?
Quick answer:
If I were Matilda, I would feel neglected and frustrated due to my parents' indifference and unethical behavior. Despite being bright, I would struggle with their lack of support and respect. I would seek solace in the library and cherish the kindness of Miss Honey, who recognizes my potential. The presence of negative figures like Miss Trunchbull would further compel me to rely on myself, develop independence, and seek positive influences.
If I were Matilda, I would feel sad and upset to have parents like hers. She is a bright and sensitive child, and yet, for that reason (along with the mere fact that she is alive), she is an annoyance to her parents. They think very little of her. Even when she is only four, they leave her alone by herself. She is lucky to be able to make her way to the library at that early age and find a kind librarian. Also, she has to face the truth that her father, a used car salesman, cheats people. It is unpleasant for her to have to obey people like her parents who she knows are not worthy of her respect.
If I were Matilda, I definitely would want to live with Miss Honey of Crunchem Hall Primary School. Miss Honey is sweet and gentle and notices from the start how bright and intelligent Matilda is. She is able to give Matilda the help and attention her parents refuse her.
If I were Matilda, I also would want to avoid the evil Miss Trunchbull. With all these poor adult role models around me, I would to cling to the few decent adults I could find. I would learn early in life that I had to fend for myself and develop my own mind, find my own path, and trust my own moral compass.
