Current research on fractals in music focuses on whether mathematics can be used to identify the differences between various styles of music (such as jazz and rock) or between styles associated with different composers or artists (such as Bach and Beethoven). In other words, the research seeks to answer the question of whether musical differences can be described quantitatively rather than merely qualitatively. Other research on fractal music examines the possibilities of using mathematics and algorithms to synthesize, or create, music. Much of this research involves the development and use of computer technology and software programs created for such purposes.
