The title character in Amantine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin’s Marianne (written under the pseudonym George Sand) is Marianne Chevreuse. She is 25 and doesn’t abide by society’s expectations of her; she isn’t married, owns land, and in choosing a husband is looking for someone she loves and wants, rather than primarily what would be deemed a good match. She is in love with her godfather, Pierre Andre.
Pierre Andre is a family friend of Marianne’s. He has known Marianne since she was a child and doesn’t realize that he is in love with her until another man, Philippe Gaucher, comes to woo her.
Philippe Gaucher is a painter who hears of Marianne’s dowry and comes to stay with Pierre Andre, hoping to be introduced to her and marry her. Marianne does not find him to be a good match, but his arrival awakens Pierre Andre’s feelings for her.
