Why did Teofilo want to work in "The Man to Send Rainclouds"?

Teofolio is the old man the two younger Native American men find dead in the fields.  He was working as a shepherd because the white man had forced the Native Americans into living on reservations and adopt European/American farming lives that were counter to everything the tribe had known.

Teofolio does not want to work in this way, but he has little option. He dies in his virtual capitivity, still believing in the old ways, and the respect the younger generation shows him and their own adherence to the ways of the past prove that they, too, have not been "won" by the Fransicans or anyone else.
