Love Medicine, a truly impressive first novel, received both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Fiction. Louise Erdrich, a member of the Turtle Mountain band of Chippewa, was one of the first women students admitted to Dartmouth, in 1972, and had previously published a collection of poetry. Published at a moment when interest in ethnic and regional literature was high, Love Medicine merged an authentic Native American voice with an accessible modern literary form.
